With the leaves turning yellow outside, the year 2011 is coming slowly to its end. But did you know that this is not a year like all the others? As a matter of fact, 2011 has been declared by the UN as “The International Year of Forests” and we wanted to remind you that you still have a few months to show your appreciation of woodlands.

ImageSo why declare a year of forests? Look around you for a moment and notice how many things originated from the forest. The United Nations wanted to remind us of how lucky we are to have this resource and to take a few moments of our life to appreciate everything that it enables us to do and have. The theme “Forests for People” is about making us aware of our ability to preserve the green masses and to take part in their sustainable development. It reminds us that, each individual has the power to make a change in our relationship with the forests no matter where we live in.

Throughout the year, governments and organizations around the world are holding various activities to enlighten their attendees on facts about the forest. As we have mentioned before, it is not too late to learn how you can be part of the solution in preserving our forests, just visit this page and see all the great activities happening around the world.

If you are the creative type and would like to organize an activity yourself, The Food and Agriculture Organization have designed a toolkit with lots of great stuff for your event to be a success. So gather your teams, whether it is your colleagues, schoolmates, friends or family and do something. Be it a big budget event, or a small activity, every effort counts. Wouldn’t you like to be a source of inspiration to someone around you?

We are very curious and would love to know more about your own experiences. So get out there and share with us on Twitter or Facebook or both!
